Geranium sanguineum

Geranium sanguineum, often known as the blood-red geranium, is a versatile and low-maintenance perennial that adds a stunning colour accent to your garden. This robust geranium is known for its striking, bright pink to crimson flowers that bloom from June to September. The flowers have vibrant colour and attract many butterflies and bees, making your garden not only aesthetically pleasing but also a valuable contribution to biodiversity.

At around 30-40 cm tall, Geranium sanguineum is ideal for the foreground of borders, as a ground cover or in rock gardens. The dark green, hand-shaped leaves contrast nicely with the vibrant flowers and remain beautiful throughout the season. In autumn, the leaves turn to warm shades of red and orange, adding extra colour to your garden.

This geranium is very low-maintenance and grows well in a wide range of soil types, as long as they are well-drained. For planting, it is advisable to soak the roots in water for 3-6 hours before placing them. Then plant the roots shallowly (1-2 cm deep) in well-drained soil in a sunny to lightly shaded location. Geranium sanguineum is also drought-tolerant and copes well with less humid conditions.
